SkyWatch Friday + Saturday Photo Hunting

Well, I'm fresh out of groundhog photos, so I thought I'd see what I had...and I found one of Lindy last year on Groundhog Day. She can see her shadow, and a bit of sky above the greenhouses near our house. (Our little town in southeastern Alberta is known as The Greenhouse Capital of the Prairies.)

This winter has been the opposite of last year. As seen above and below, we had a lot of snow last winter. Now we've had so many above-freezing days in January, and the beginning of February, we're afraid some of our trees and shrubs will start leafing out, only to be hit later with the area's normal -20 to -30 Celsius temperatures (4 below and 22 below zero Fahrenheit). Of course, if that happens, we could be losing some of our greenery, which is a serious matter in the desert part of the prairie.

Below, there is still plenty of fruit on our ornamental crabapple tree because we've had so little snow the deer haven't had to come to our yard to eat very often. The larger deer can reach the fruit quite high up the tree when they stand on their hind legs. It's amazing to watch.

Oh, and Groundhog Day? According to what I've read so far, opinions seem to be split amongst Canada's and the USA's most popular underground predictors. So, it will either be an early spring, or another six weeks of winter. Time will tell.

Our winter too has been a polar opposite of last year. We had a lot of snow last year and this year barely 3 inches. I'm wondering if February and March are going to be snow-less or we're going to get hit by the "big one". Who knows.

Beautiful captures for the day, Kay! I love the next to last one! Stunning! Lindy does look as though she's keeping an eye out for the groundhog!! Hope you have a great weekend!

Love the picture of Lindy, waiting so patiently, - and the snowy 'coulee' picture touches the heart of a prairie girl! We had a cloudy morning, but the sky is blue now, and the sun is skimming the mountains. You are quite right, we just have to wait and see what February and March have in store for us.....

Hi Kay, today in Vancouver the weather is quite warm and the rain has stopped for a few days. It looks like buds will be coming up soon but it could also turn colder. I guess our winter was not as cold (to my mind) as it was stated to be by the meteorologists. I hope you get more snow so that you won't have drought later.

I didn't know that deer would stand on their hind legs to get the fruit!

Pix of Lindy are always a treat. :-)

I didn't know you could eat crab apples. What fun!

Lindy sure makes a cute substitute groundhog.

Wonderfully snowy shots from last year.

It's been mild here up to a few days ago and now we're caught in a very very cold spell - down to minus 22 C with even colder temps forecast for the weekend.

I know what you mean... we've had a terrifically warm winter. Our azaleas are blooming at least a month early. I don't think we're in danger of a freeze, now, but if we got one it wouldn't be pretty. And the summer is going to feel REALLY long this year :(

I love that shadow shot of Lindy :)

Beautiful photos all. Re the winter: seems like the snow's migrated east -- to Europe and also parts of Japan, including Tokyo!

Nice photos, all of them. That is so cool that the deer eat the apples from that tree.

I don't know why Lindi makes me think of Diana sitting alone in front of the Taj Mahala (?) lol !
The twigs are nice too !

Beautiful shots. I've missed not having snow this winter and we're already starting to have spring flowers since it's been a pretty mild winter. I worry because we can still have snow well into March in the part of NC where I live, as well as a hard freeze until mid to late April although usually it get pretty warm where I live by April. It's not that unusual to have a few blooms in late February and then get a wet snow in March but to have a lot of blooms in early February is crazy. I guess the weather has been strange all over.
