Saturday's Photo Hunting: "vintage" this week

Here are two views of my favorite piece of furniture. I fell in love with this desk when I was 14 years old. I didn't ask my dad to buy it for me, I just told him to get Mom to bring me sandwiches every day because I'd have to stay there, in the store, because I couldn't bear to be parted from it.
It has been with me ever since and is now 136 years old.

I inherited intricate pieces of needlework done by my grandmother and her older sisters.

The baby in the photo below is my MacKenzie grandfather. He only had two sisters and the younger one, with fair hair in the back with Great-Grandpa, died in her teens. His other sister (right) lived to a good age.

SkyWatch Friday + Saturday Photo Hunting

Well, I'm fresh out of groundhog photos, so I thought I'd see what I had...and I found one of Lindy last year on Groundhog Day. She can see her shadow, and a bit of sky above the greenhouses near our house. (Our little town in southeastern Alberta is known as The Greenhouse Capital of the Prairies.)

This winter has been the opposite of last year. As seen above and below, we had a lot of snow last winter. Now we've had so many above-freezing days in January, and the beginning of February, we're afraid some of our trees and shrubs will start leafing out, only to be hit later with the area's normal -20 to -30 Celsius temperatures (4 below and 22 below zero Fahrenheit). Of course, if that happens, we could be losing some of our greenery, which is a serious matter in the desert part of the prairie.

Below, there is still plenty of fruit on our ornamental crabapple tree because we've had so little snow the deer haven't had to come to our yard to eat very often. The larger deer can reach the fruit quite high up the tree when they stand on their hind legs. It's amazing to watch.

Oh, and Groundhog Day? According to what I've read so far, opinions seem to be split amongst Canada's and the USA's most popular underground predictors. So, it will either be an early spring, or another six weeks of winter. Time will tell.

Saturday's Photo Hunting: animals this week

I'm a bit late for our friend Gattina's Saturday Photo Hunting, but I couldn't make up my mind what to do. The theme this week is animals, and of course I immediately think of Lindy, but I wanted something different.
I've decided to show you these animals (and a couple of people) we saw in Russia last summer. These shots are taken from the deck of the river cruise ship Viking Surkov after our visit to Mandrogy.

Cattle and sheep.

A billy-goat and his family.

A dog and his human companion.

Photo hunting can be fun. The theme is different every week. I hope to see many more of you join us—preferably on Saturday instead of Sunday, because when it's Sunday afternoon here, it's already the middle of the night in Europe, and Monday in Australia!
Thanks, Gattina!

Saturday Photo Hunting: joy

Our friend Gattina in Belgium has selected "Joy" for the theme of her Saturday Photo Hunting this week.
It wasn't easy choosing joyful pictures to post for this weekend. Anyone who has seen my blog has already seen the most joyous photo I know: our dog Lindy rolling on the ground. I've chosen a few, including another one of Lindy rolling on the ground!

Above, youngest grand-nephew chasing bubbles on the beach in Hawaii.

Above, youngest grandson playing with toys on his second birthday.

Dick and Lindy sharing some smiles on Dick's recliner.

And Lindy, yes, rolling on the ground. Only food makes her happier.
