ABC Wednesday: E is for Elk

© Photos by Richard Schear, Southeastern Alberta
Not camouflaged as well as deer, the mighty elk and his harem depend, perhaps, too much on their additional height, bulk, and speed. When lying down in the tall, brown winter grasses, however, they blend right in with the landscape.

They also look to be very alert, which may be another reason they survive.

What majestic creatures. I've never seen an elk in person; I would love to see one.

One day I will get to see one for myself. One day...

Very nice shots of these elk amid the grasses. Such a treat to see animals roaming freely in the wild rather than the less fortunate kind that are fenced in by humans.

When I lived in Connecticut we had deer. In Vermont we had deer and moose...never elk (that I've seen). Beautiful shots.

We watched a herd once somewhere in Northern California. Crossing a big field. Where we were, we could see the bull elk --just watching as the cows crossed the open space. When nothing happened to several of them, he finally sauntered casually across! There's a lesson in there somewhere, but I don't think I want to learn it!

Your pictures (or Richard's?) are beautiful.

I love the us of the term "harem". We saw a group of them when we went to Yellowstone. I thought they were very friendly.

They are beautiful creatures with the strangest bugling call. Never expected that sound to come out of them.

Nice shots of the elk! We have an over abudance of white tail deer aorund here. They have adapted to urban plants for a diet, but still don't know how to use the cross walks. So far our winter has been very mild. The TV weather folks refer to our cold weather as "Alberta clippers" - cold, windy and snowy, crossing into the US at Chicago and heading for us. They have not used the term this winter.

My one and only elk I have ever seen was near the Yellowstone park in the States when my aunt screemed : "A bear, a bear" ! At a closer look it turned out it was an elk ! I have to add the animal was far away !

A free roaming animal is testament to consideration to the wilds. It can never be better than that!

Apart from zoos, I have never seen wild elks. They are beautiful animals and you are so privileged to meet them at close quarters!
Our country is overpopulated! But you know this of course!
Have a nice weekend, Kay! Kind regards to Dick!
