Open Link Monday: poets are...

TO  THE  PEOPLE  OF  THE  WORLD

poets
are pirates

we take everything—
one’s look
and one’s smile
and the way that one sings,
one’s gestures,
one’s postures,
the sound of one’s laugh

and none sees us take it
like a flash photograph,

but take it we will,
absorb it, distill
it, until
we’ve made it our own

and the essence
of personhood
shines in a poem

Yes, we poets do tend to capture moments exactly like a photographer captures a picture and, if we are lucky, we can transfer them into pictures in words.
Lovely. Great photographs too.

I never thought of seeing poets this way....in a way, I "suck" everything around me to write ~

How very well you describe a poet's art. We are pirates.. I like that about us.. a band of cut-throat robbers, and pilferers of other people's stuff.

You expressed in this poem what I ponder - often. How much of the poetry I read comes from a place deep inside the writer. No matter the subject, the prompt ... I know mine does. The essence of personhood. Pirates all!

Kay, you have captured the essence of poetic license - and of poetry writing... I love it!

Like teachers and artists of every ilk, all the world is ours for the taking, remaking, sharing, comparing. Lucky us!

How delightful! This is much fun.
I've been too busy outside to write much, despite your inspiration...

mhm... just. like. that.
absorb, fiddle, spit it out through your own teeth, in the shape of your own internal organs.

What a fun poem! And shiver me timbers, I'm quite happy to be a pirate :) Now, where did I put that bottle of rum?
