For Real Toads, with Mary: ordinary things

the dishwasher
sounds like
mom’s old wringer washing machine
water sloshing
back and forth
back and forth
back and forth.

we usually turn the dishwasher on
at bedtime
and it soothes me to sleep
with memories
of childhood.

I put the dishwasher on this morning,
and it's making me
sleepy, like a child
hearing a lullaby.

Today, for Mary's Mixed Bag at the writers' group Imaginary Garden with Real Toads, Mary shared the poetry of Stuart Dischell, who wrote Thin Song of the Leaky Faucet, as well as As I Dispose of an Old Encyclopedia.
Our challenge is to write a poem about an everyday thing. The everyday thing I've chosen is our dishwasher, which brings back memories of the laundry machine of my childhood.

it's all well and good until your dishwasher starts making the sound of a fighter jet taking off and then you know for sure it is broken. :)

I LOVE this!

I think you have captured something of Dischell's terse style here, in a very personal way.

Interesting, isn't it, how certain sounds take one back to childhood? I am running the dishwasher at THIS moment, and indeed (though we didn't have one) I could see how you think it sounds like a wringer washer. Your words capture the sounds WELL.

My dishwasher is SO LOUD I can't even hear myself think when it's on! It must be nice to have one that lulls you to sleep.

I never thought about it that way, but you're right... the dishwasher is like a lullaby!

I remember those old clothes washers. It was a lot of work back then to wash the clothes. Of course it was an improvement on having to d all laundry by hand. I like the sound of the dishwasher too ;-) Enjoy your weekend. We are finally getting some sunshine here.

Kay, I do the same thing. I start mine before bed, it lulls me to sleep~ The sudsy sloshing noise. Funny, this newer one was suppose to be quiet...lol It makes more noise than the other one!

Happy Friday! :D

Funny how those old familiars are soothing. Nice touch with the image!

You're right, the dishwasher does make a sleepy sound.

Our dishwasher doesn't make any noises but our washer/dryer does.

I like how these sounds make you remember and nostalgic of home ~

there certainly are sounds that can take you back to childhood..for me it is the sounds of an engine making strange noises...my father was a mechanic and i grew up playing next to him while he worked on a car.

.... a lullaby. Never thought of it in that way... :) My grandmother had an old sink/wringer/washer and she would hang the clothes on a clothesline. To this day the sight of sheets and clothes hanging on a line soothe my spirit. Saddens me that many neighborhoods we have lived in forbid this.

Haaa....the dryer used to be right next to my room, and it definitely had the same effect on me. Now wake up! dishes need unloading! lol...loved this.
