French composer and conductor Maurice Jarre was asked by film director David Lean to compose a theme for the character of Lara, played by Julie Christie in the 1965 movie Doctor Zhivago, based on Russian writer Boris Pasternak's Nobel Prize-winning novel about the years surrounding the Russian Revolution.
Lara's Theme remains to this day one of the most recognizable movie themes ever written.

Later, lyrics by Paul Francis Webster were added to the music and eventually recorded as the song Somewhere, My Love by Connie Francis. The most popular recording of the song, however, was made by Ray Conniff with his orchestra and singers.

I loved that movie. Got a bit tired of the theme because it was played so often, but now simply feel nostalgic.
That is a very beautiful song. I have to say I am probably the only person on the planet that has not watched this movie.
Now I'm going to have to buy the DVD!

aaah, I remember dancing around to this and thinking it was SOOOO romantic...
David Lean's movies were very successful at the box office here!! Julie Christie was well liked and so was the film Dr Zhivago.
The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957), Lawrence of Arabia (1962), Doctor Zhivago (1965), and A Passage to India (1984) were his other movies which I remember too as big hits!! So your L for Lara and Lean is very interesting!!

Oh, this post has brought back memories of a simply gorgeous movie visually that was also a delight to hear! The heart-tugging music and beautiful scenes, many of which were amid pristine falling snow, captured my imagination … yet I can barely recall the lovely Lara. :)

Such haunting music - the photography in this movie was incredible and combined with the music and the plot it was truly memorable.
I loved that film with the handsome Omar Sharif and the hauntingly beautiful music "Lara's Theme" - Happy memories of a wonderful film!
Ah, one of my all-time favourite movies! Loved it way back when and still recognize the music! I even considered naming my first daughter Lara, but it had become such a common name by then, I didn't.

Good choice for L, wonderful film, I always think of the snow, Lean was a superb director. I still have the album of the music (so old it is on vinyl), seen the film umpteen times and read the book, guess I must like it:-)

One of my all time favorite movies! Magical!
The music is lovely especially when it is played on the mandolin -- or is it a balalaika? Probably the latter.
I have to admit that I really liked this move. :) The song gives me a strange sort of lonely nostalgic feeling.

I think I have always been a little enamoured with Omar - great post - loved the movie - wow - that was years ago I saw it.
Brilliant film, they don't make them like that anymore.
The tune was great, the scenery was great and the actors were gloriously beautiful, male and female.
I loved that movie, and the music! It was one of the first movies I ever saw in a cinema. Over here it had a 16 year age limit, and I was under 16 when it was showing, but they would let you in if accompanied by an adult, so I talked my mom into taking me. Great post!
This is one of my favorite movies ever!!! I love it and have seen it several times. And yes, Maurice Jarre is the father of Jean Michel Jarre - quite amazing both.
I loved that song almost as much as the movie. I'm probably one of the few who read the book before seeing the movie and I was swept away by both. Being a young teen (yep, I read the book at that age) I also had a crush on Omar Sharif.
I loved the film, mostly for Omar Sharif;-)
