Shadows were abundant in the northern forests of Alberta when my husband visited the city of Fort McMurray on a business trip early this month.
Grasses, mosses, twigs and leaves all contribute their shadows.
When Dick first noticed this lovely golden-crowned bird, it was in shadow.
With the aid of our omnipresent pal Mr. Google, I was able to identify this close-up photo as a Three-toed American Woodpecker.

Gorgeous photos of the bird! We have cardinals and bluejays here which I would love to photograph but they never stay still long enough.

A beautiful forest area that would be a joy to wander! Love the atmosphere in the first photo and the birds are adorable!
Looks much dryer than our west coast forest understory. But still pretty. I can almost imagine walking on the trail and smelling the warm forest smell. - Margy
