On the western Canadian prairie, this coulee is full of shadow.

Looking down into a coulee, we see individual shadows of varying sizes.

Shadow Shot Sunday 2: northern forest

Shadows were abundant in the northern forests of Alberta when my husband visited the city of Fort McMurray on a business trip early this month.

Grasses, mosses, twigs and leaves all contribute their shadows.

When Dick first noticed this lovely golden-crowned bird, it was in shadow.

With the aid of our omnipresent pal Mr. Google, I was able to identify this close-up photo as a Three-toed American Woodpecker.

Shadow Shot Sunday 2: Lindy and other dogs

This little dog is almost hidden in Lindy's shadow on the brown grass, but it makes its presence known quite loudly, telling Lindy to go away.

The little dog's companion, a laid-back Chocolate Labrador Retriever, comes along behind it. Lindy smiles at the Lab, but he's not paying any attention to her.

Also not looking at Lindy that day was Sarge, the husky who used to love her. Lindy stopped and looked at him, but he ignored her, as she always ignored him.

Lindy and her dad did have a good walk that day, however, and saw plenty of lovely shadows in the coulee.

Oh yes, the rocks make larger shadows, but I took this photo on the island of Kauai, Hawaii, in December, 2010, because of all the little shadows made by the leaves of this groundcover plant.

From the trees and bushes beside them to the bridges crossing over them, there are always shadows to be found on or near streams in the Swiss Alps, as we discovered during a trip on the Glacier Express train in April, 2011.

Shadow Shot Sunday: the Catherine Palace

The intriguing intricacies and intricate intrigues of the lush Catherine Palace in St. Petersburg, Russia, have left many shadows of one sort or another—on the walls, on the floors, or in the history books.
My husband toured this huge, beautiful palace without me during our August holiday last year. My sore feet were happy to miss all the walking, but I was sorry to miss such beauty—however, my husband got some wonderful shadow shots!

This lovely lady seems oblivious to all the water pouring from her jug as she relaxes in her shadowy niche on an outside wall of the Catherine Palace.

This mixture of golden reflections and shapely shadows comes from my friend Maryann, a Californian now living on the beautiful Oregon coast. She spent Christmas in California with her children and grandchildren, and couldn't resist capturing this cell-phone shot of the sun's rays bouncing off windows and onto a parking lot in Santa Rosa. A golden gift for Christmas, for her to share with me, and I with you.

Shadow Shot Sunday 2: Yaroslavl, Russia

We will always remember the lovely Russian city of Yaroslavl, near Moscow. Soon after we returned from our Waterways of the Czars cruise, there was a terrible and tragic accident which cast a shadow of sorrow across Russia. See my post about it HERE!
We hope 2012 brings fewer shadows and more sunshine to all hearts.

Shadow Shot Sunday: no snow shadows today

I've had to go to my archives for Christmas snow-shadows because Christmas Day is dull, dreary, and warmish (+7C, almost 45F) with ice melting on the road in front of our house. Now that I have my new window from which to see them, the deer aren't coming to eat our ornamental crabapples because there is plenty of grass available for them. Tomorrow promises to be sunny, with slightly lower temperatures, then continuing warmish with sunshine until Friday when there might be some wet flurries (mixed rain and snow).
Not jolly ho-ho-ho holiday weather, but the highways are clear for family visiting.

These photos are from December 2009, and from the spring of this year when the snow wouldn't and wouldn't and wouldn't stop.

She was so happy
to have a family.

I love the photo of our snowberry bush, above, covered in glistening fresh snow.

Here's the snowberry bush again, with new snow falling in big, fat flakes.

Shadows deep inside this Mugo Pine look like a hideaway for a small animal.

Shadows contrast during visit

Visiting longtime friends at their comfy yellow house just outside my home town of White Rock, BC, I was struck by the contrast of light and shadow on their lawn and under their eaves. Small birds had emptied the feeder, but crows sat on a wire, hoping for the crusts of bread my friend Ruth and her husband Harmen often throw them.
