Our world was Matisse's world for a while

The scenes above and right reflect the one Henri Matisse showed through an open window in the painting at the top of this page.

Matisse may have chosen his palette from the cheerful colors of the houses in Collioure when he painted this view of the tower on the waterfront.
Scattered throughout the town of Collioure are "frames" through which photographers can capture the same scenes scenes Matisse painted there early in the 20th century.

Beautiful paintings. Lovely use of colors.

Same scenes but different representations. Interesting to see the contrast of realism through photography and artistic impressions that, although less exact, convey an essence unseen by the camera. So great you had a chance to view the works of this important artist!

How wonderful. I would jump on a train right now and head south, if only I didn't have to do this silly work thing! xxx

What bright, cheerful colors in the paintings! I do appreciate your putting the present-day scene in photographs, to what was the inspiration for Matisse during the past century. The idea of frames around town is unique and very thoughtful. Thanks for an enjoyable and informative post.
