Real Toads: Ella's delicious challenge

At the online writers' group, Imaginary Garden with Real Toads, Ella has the edge on us today, having posted photos of many delicious concoctions and challenging us to sit down to write about poems about them, rather than rushing to the nearest bakery. Easier said than done, Ella my friend.

when I was young
mom often baked
a beautiful, delicious cake
containing a whole dozen eggs

we three loved to watch it rise
through the oven window
it rose so high
above the pan
we were sure it would overflow

the top got crisp
and then it cracked
as she took it out onto a rack
and turned it upside down to cool
on a long-necked bottle
of long-finished brew

Note: I couldn't find a poetic way to say "angel cake pan" but those of you who had mothers who loved to bake have figured it out. Yes, delicious memories.

I love this memory...so reminds me of the Angel Food Cake my Mom use to bake. It would set teeter-totter on a glass coke bottle! Such a sweet memory! Fun to read~

What a fun description! I always remember those cakes upside down on the pop bottle too!

Well, you've come up with a great poem but you need to explain the cooling on the long necked bottle part?
Wouldn't the cake fall off?

This brings back memories Kay! My gramma always cooled the cake upside down on grampa's empty beer bottle.

here's mine -Aroma

The long neck of the bottle fit through the hole of the angel cake pan, and the cake teetered there until it had cooled. Then Mom would take it down and run a knife around the edges to loosen the cake before turning it out onto a plate. It was called a Sunshine Cake because the 12 egg yolks made it a lovely yellow colour.

For birthdays, my mom would string streamers, and bake an angel food cake with whipped cream and crushed pineapple for topping. OMG. I still love it.

I think I would need the cake to help with the inspiration to write the poem! Lovely words, reminds me of baking cakes with my Nan xxx

Oh my goodness, that sounds delicious! My mom wasn't one for baking, and I definitely think I missed out! Anyone want to make me one?

You've explained the way to use the long necked bottle, but not WHY?! My cakes turn out straight onto a wire rack, and reversed again with another. No problem!

I love the way you addressed all the senses of this memory, putting the reader right there in the kitchen with the girls.
