Weekend Reflections: to tree or not to tree?

That has been the question for the past ten years, because my husband and intrepid photographer, Richard Schear, isn't interested in Christmas, having been born into and brought up with Jewish traditions. In fact, we have sometimes deliberately scheduled our travels for late December.  But, yesterday, Dick cheerfully went through the trap-door and down the ladder into the cellar (something I've never been able to do) and brought up my little Charlie Brown artificial tree for me. He held it still while I looped a ribbon of LED lights around it, and the dog watched as I fastened three sizes of red baubles onto it. Someone sent Dick a card in a gold envelope, so I used the envelope to fashion an amateur-looking star, which I attached with masking tape to the top of my tree. Then, last night, I took photos, with reflections in the window overlooking the snow outside, and also on the metallic "needles" of the tree.

Good for you guys. We don't put up much, but I do love coloured lights. I tried to get some for Mom's outside deck, but there were sold out. Wow - got to shop early these days. - Margy

It is good that you both can give and take in this way, Kay. I do not have a tree up or any decorations, however, Kirsten does have a tree. And we are all going to Kirsten's father's house or our Christmas dinner on Saturday, and then our separate ways for the Sunday. For us Christmas is three days long.

My spouse, a secular Jew, loves Christmas. I, on the other hand, keep wondering when I can retire from Christmas. When I'm 70? I suspect the answer is never.

We guys do anything for a quiet life Kay, even get the Christmas tree from the loft or in my case from the roof space in the garage where I teetered up a ladder. By the way you must have cool Merlins visiting your garden/yard - totally unheard of anywhere else in the world. You sure they're my beloved Merlin? Think I'll have to visit, check it out and get some pics.

Oh yay! a tree! The thing I love the ABSOLUTE BEST about Christmas is the colored lights, especially after dark. I enjoy the glow so much! I love the colors in your photo. I am fearful of your cellar!!!!! hee hee. Never make me go down there!

It's lovely Kay. You need to always celebrate what is dear to you. A small tree is a big reminder of part of which makes Christmas special. Especially with a star on top.
