More than one volcano in my world last month

                                                                                                                            Photos by Richard Schear
Before we went to Hawaii last month, I prepared several blog posts in draft, so I could use them while on our holiday. I did most of them in November, but some as early as October. Little did I know there would be such similarities between the actively volcanic island of Lanzarote in the Canary Islands, and a dormant volcano on the island of Maui in the USA's south Pacific state of Hawaii.
The Lanzarote photos were posted on December 16, actually three days after we visited Haleakala, the 10,000-foot dormant volcano on Maui, and I didn't make the connection then, either. It wasn't until we uploaded the Hawaii photos to our computers that I recognized the same colors we had seen in January, 2009. Just take a look at the first couple of Lanzarote photos HERE.
The big difference is, the clouds seen on today's post for My World Tuesday are just that, clouds. On Lanzarote, in the Canary Islands, the mist in the first photo is actually steam coming from the present volcanic activity below the ground.
There is an active volcano in Hawaii. In fact, on Hawaii, the "big island" but we only saw it at night, from the deck of the cruise ship, Norwegian Cruise Line's Pride of America. The captain had the ship moving very slowly but, nevertheless, Dick's photos show multiple lines of lava against a black background. It's very pretty, even dramatic, but not very accurate. Mount Kilauea is one of five volcanoes that form the "big island" of Hawaii.

What spectacular landscapes, Kay. Good job capturing those subtle shades. The active volcano looks like fireworks in the night sky. This must have been magical to see in person!

Very cool.
I've never seen a volcano, never mind o0ne with lavs flowing.

hmm, word verification is "fart" - is that what the volcano was doing?!

I think I prefer the lush greenery of Hawaii, but these are impressive views.

It's amazing to have such moon-like landscape on such a tropical island such as Maui. Nice shots. I've been there several times, but every time I drive up there, I get car sick and my ears fill up with fluid! It's worth it though! Enjoy the week. (Hope you can get back to the Gulf Islands some time soon).

Incredibly stark and lovely landscape, Kay. Are particularly fond of volcanos, or do they just happen to be where you were vacationing?

I like Dick's photos, even if they aren't accurate portrayals. The red and black makes an intense and interesting abstract work of art.

I have never seen a volcano, dead or alive. Stunning pictures for me. Thanks Kay.

@ Wren - I don't go looking for volcanoes, but when Mount St. Helens erupted in 1980, I was living in British Columbia, near the Washington State border, and I actually heard the explosion. I had no idea what it was until later. Since then, I've seen it from the air a couple of times when traveling from BC to California.

I was impressed by the color when we visited Haleakala a few years ago. I see what you mean about the similarity to the volcano in the Canary Islands.

Beautiful pictures Kay! I have never been so close to a volcano as this. I just do not have the opportunity.

Love the soft grain of the volcanoes.

Wonderful pictures and what an interesting comparison. Although I've never seen anything quite like these, I can relate to being surprised when you download your pictures. I am often surprised at what I "caught" and also often am reminded of another place, another time.

Fun shots, Kay. I remember seeing just one eruption and was really awed by the power of it. You really got to do a lot while here and while suffering from that terrible cold.
