My world has big-eared deer on sparkling snow

My favorite deer photo. I just love the face of the little one. These are mule deer, easily distinguished by their large ears and their black-tipped tails.

Bright sun on snow causes it to sparkle. These photos were taken before snow was very deep.
Photos by Richard Schear

This young buck seems to be licking his lips after a tasty bite of the still-visible grass.
Right now the snow is deep enough to cover all but the tallest grasses, so the deer are braving vehicle and pedestrian traffic to come into town and feed on trees such as our ornamental crabapple.
Part of the same herd, closer to town, in slightly deeper snow, a few days later.
That's my favorite sweet-faced youngster on the left.

I cropped this photo of our Golden Retriever, Lindy, used already this week for "Pet Pride" so you can see how deep the snow got, with just the grass tips peeking out. That's Lindy's back foot about three inches down from the top of the snow, to the left, just below her neck. She was stuck but didn't care.

these are adorable. I've not heard of mule deer before - their ears sure are funny looking!

Lindy looks so content and relaxed being stuck there … probably because you or Dick are near. Terrific photos of the deer, Kay! They always seem to peer back at us the way we peer at them. And thank goodness for crab apple trees when the snow is deep. :)

The deer are so sweet. I guess no one really minds their nibbling remaining shoots of grass and trees during the winter months. Newly grown vegetables in the summer might be a different story.

Lindy is the sweetest.

Poor Lindy! I'm getting cold just looking at her.

Great deer photos. Those ears are quite something! I'd heard of mule deer but hadn't known that their name came from the ears.

Holy cow, that's a lot of snow! And I am only talking about the shot where you say it isn't deep yet! Love the deer - they're gorgeous.

How sweet..I have deer coming into the yard and I feel so badly for them as the snow is unusally deep for us...they take cracked corn from the bird feeders....Lindy is a snow dog!!! .. Michelle

Hi Kay,
Mule Deer live here in the Mts of CO, too - they sometimes come into my yard to browse. I love the light in Lindy's photo! She seems to be watching the sun rise.

You win, that's a lot more snow that I got. Lindy doesn't seem to mind though. - Margy

How nice of Dick to go out into the cold and deep snow to take these great shots.

How lovely to have the deer close enough to be able to photograph them. Here we are lucky if we catch a glimpse of one, as they are very very shy and there are not many around here xxx

Nice to meet you Kay. I love deer, and elk and many others. We have mule deer in Colorado also. Your pictures are beautiful.

Thank you for your comment on Dominic's blog about my post. You must be a good writer to have a publication house interested in you. I am doing a plot series on my blog to start Feb. 14, 2011...not hard to remember Valentines Day. You may be interested in that.

Hi Kay, I love their facial expressions! They seem to be watching you taking their shots!

The colors of blues and browns are just very pleasing and a perfect landscape of your World!

So beautiful! You make the most of Winter! I love your "at-home" posts as well as of your travels.

(I just re-read the Seattle post and see that the pigs were in 2007 -- I really haven't been there for a few years.)
