Johnny Horton hits Thursday Theme Song

NORTH TO ALASKA
Big Sam left Seattle in the year of ninety-two,
With George Pratt his partner and brother Billy, too.
They crossed the Yukon River and found the bonanza gold,
Below that old White Mountain just a little southeast of Nome.
Sam crossed the majestic mountains to a valley far below,
He talked to his team of huskies as he mushed on through the snow,
With the northern lights a-runnin' wild in the land of the midnight sun.
Yes, Sam McCord was a mighty man in the year of nineteen-one.

Alaska photos by Kay Davies and Richard Schear, 2007
Note:
If you live in Alaska, you might notice the lyricist has taken poetic license with geography here. White Mountain, Alaska, is actually northeast of Nome and is not near the Yukon River.

It has been said that the title song from the 1960 John Wayne-Stewart Granger movie North to Alaska was Johnny Horton's biggest hit (see previous post on this site) but he had many others, too.

A Johnny Horton song that was a lot of fun in 1959, and enjoyed for many years afterward, is The Battle of New Orleans, but another of his hits that goes with these photos is Springtime in Alaska.

Still a great tune for dancing is Honky Tonk Man, his first big hit, from 1956.

Johnny Horton died at the age of 35, the victim of a drunk driver.

Woah! What amazes me is that I KNOW these songs! I'm not even American... and of course neither are you, Kay! How fun!

[That middle photo of the serious performer you like, Kay, is doing the throat singing... it's an amazing sound. I have it on file, but I have yet to figure out how to add an audio to my post without making it a "must listen".]

Great photos to go along with this song. I remember the song and the movie well. When I moved to Alaska in the eighties I hummed the song for days before getting on the plane.

Whenever I see that movie I get a kick out of all the trees they show around Nome. Last time I was in the Nome area trees on the tundra were somewhat rare.

@ Squirrel Queen -- I believe most of the movie was shot California. Not much tundra in California. LOL
