Thursday Theme Song: walk over the world

In 2008, we had a lot of walking to do. We went to New York City, we went to China, and we went to Spain, with a cruise to the Canary Islands and to Portugal. We bought shoes that were made for walking. Mine looked like they were made for walking on the moon.

These shoes were made for walking

Thursday Theme Song...smoke gets in...

RIP Herb Reed, last surviving member of a singing group that's been part of my life for more than 50 years. I've linked his name here to yesterday's story in one of the papers for which I worked in the 60s and 70s.
Wikipedia says this about Herb, who is the one who came up with the name The Platters: He was the only member of The Platters who sang on all of the approximately 400 songs recorded by the group.
 
When I was young, I was amazed by the vocalization in this song in particular, and I am still impressed by the range and talent today. Oh, how I wished I could sing, but, alas, I could only memorize lyrics, not carry a tune. The Platters did more than carry the tune, they made it soar.
 
I've tried to get the song from YouTube but I keep getting a message saying it is currently unavailable, so I assume the whole world is trying to do the same thing, all at once, and YouTube can't handle the volume. I'm hoping someone else has posted it to Hootin' Anni's Thursday Theme Song.

Thursday Theme Song: a gift from afar

I've already posted about our kitchen renovation interrupting my life and my computer access and, as the cabinetmakers added trim and doors today, I wondered what I could possibly post for Hootin' Anni's musical meme, Thursday Theme Song. This afternoon an e-mail arrived here in Canada from a friend in Scotland. He had seen this video of an Australian singer on YouTube and shared it with us.
His e-mail said
"Sometimes it is not necessary to understand the words of a song, all you need to know is the beauty and emotion of the human soul.

"Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu was blind at birth and speaks a very local language but reaches out with a sound that came from God.

"Understand the beauty in this, the human spirit."

This video shows a remarkable man with a remarkable voice. There is nothing I can say but "listen" — I'm sure Anni will forgive me for not following the rules of TTS this week. After I heard this, nothing else would do.

This is one of the, if not the first song I ever remember hearing. It was definitely the Kay Kayser version, and I know when it was recorded, so I was two years old, perhaps three by the time I realized I was listening to music.

Born (in a hospital) on the bank of British Columbia's mighty Fraser River, within spitting distance of the Pacific Ocean, I have always had an interest in things nautical and things related to fishing. The next two songs I remember hearing were Red Sails in the Sunset, and The Shrimp Boats are Coming.

Thursday Theme Song: springtime...

I was looking through some old travel photos this morning and found these of my husband Dick and other tourists in 2007. Not all of them looked unhappy, but none of them looked warm and cozy, either, especially my intrepid photographer.
I'm typing this on the morning of Wednesday, March 28, 2012, and it's the big guy's birthday. After he took out the garbage, I set him free for the day, to go do man-things, uninterrupted by wifely nagging, until I take him out to dinner this evening. You know what they say, if you love it, set it free. LOL

Thursday Theme Song: my 1000th post

Starting with a little travel blog in the autumn of 2009, being read by half a dozen friends, this how I felt after I started posting to memes: as if I'd fallen into a ring of fire in a three-ring circus. I now have 255 followers and my stats page shows almost 55,000 page views (not including the times I view it myself), with 3,588 of them last month alone. Today there are a thousand posts to be found on my blog. I have more, in draft, which only I can see. I can't help but wonder how these numbers translate into blogging success. Is this good or not? I don't know.

because song, whether on radio, in the car, on a record-player, on TV, on cassettes, on CDs, at home, on vacation, wherever two or more members of the Davies family happened to be, was an important part of our lives. We were always playing "Name That Tune" — if the radio announcer didn't give the name, we'd say "Who sang that?" or "Who played that trumpet...that saxophone...that piano?" and the winner didn't get anything except the right to gloat until the next song came on. This probably started when I learned to talk, and it continues. Even without Mom and Dad, if I'm with one of my brothers we can't hear a familiar tune without trying to see who can name the artist fastest.
