Kerry's shades of grey challenge for toads

12

I felt more alive
in black and white
than I ever did in colour:
the hot pinks and purples,
the plaids and the dots,
disguised what was real about me

oh, sure, turquoise
17
suited my eyes —
my mother was right
about that,
but for the real me
to be treated well
by a camera,
I needed no help

the lens made me smile
the flash made me laugh
the photographer?
40
only a prop—
I could talk to the camera
while it talked to me
we’d talk
and we’d talk
and we’d talk

now look at these:
the shades of grey,
the shades of black,
and of white,
60
they’re all of them different
there’s no two the same
a pink grey in the first
a brown tone in the next,
some sharper
than others
but all just as me
as can be

Today, at the Imaginary Garden with Real Toads, our boss toad Kerry has asked us to think about black and white, about shades of grey, in life and in art.

The smile was the same in all photos: beautiful!

Your words “I felt more alive in black and white than I ever did in colour” takes us on a journey many will relate to. Also interesting how in photographs, as in life, colour can bring out surface aspects but hide something deeper.

I love these pics of you, Kay! You look so happy in all of them! I agree that B and W photography often is best for portraits. I think my old B and W of me as a child were some of my best shots!

And the warm smile has remained unchanged. I think you are very right- there is nothing to beat the classic image of a black and white photo.

Wow, what a beautiful tale. Of course, I love the 60 year-old! Are these photos all you? (((Hugs))) Jo

@ Jo — Oh, yes, they're all me, at various ages. I'm somewhat older than any of them now, however!

The sparkling eyes are there no matter what colour isn't! ;-)

Beautiful, Kay. Your spirit has remained unstoppable. You're beautiful all the way along.

How many ways can I say how much I love your poem and photos? Too many to count!

Even though this piece is about black and white being so complimentary I enjoy the splashes of color that you employ especially the turquoise eyes. Nicely done, Kay!

@ Hannah — as much as I wish it were true, I don't have turquoise eyes. My mother just thought I looked good in turquoise because it made my navy-blue eyes look brighter.

Oh, yes...and turquoise would accomplish that!! I wish I did, too! :)

I have more of a love-hate relationship with the camera. ;_) But it is indeed kind to you in all of these--I love the first and last especially, and the lilt to the progression of words that carries your song along. Grey can be a very beautiful color--look at any dove.

All with a cuteness and really natural charm. (Joie de vivre in any language.)
