Our World Tuesday: trees on BC's Gulf Islands

Photo by Kay Davies, July, 2012

Last week, starting on Tuesday, I was thrilled to be able to visit my young niece and nephew and their mother, along with her lifelong friend and her two children, on beautiful Pender Island, one of British Columbia's fabulous Gulf Islands, north of Washington State's San Juan Islands.

One of my many favorite things about the Gulf Islands and the BC coast would have to be the beautiful arbutus trees, which I first saw when I traveled up the coast in 1964. The trees with the red bark, behind the evergreens in the photo above, are arbutus trees.

In the USA, these trees are known as madrones, or madronas.

The photo below is a Wikimedia Commons photo by Ryan Bushby of a large arbutus tree in Victoria, BC's capital city, which is on Vancouver Island. Ryan's photo shows the peeling red bark better than does my photo.

A lovely shot through the trees. I remember seeing the red bark trees in Victoria . There was one right outside the Empress Hotel where we were staying and it looked exactly like the one here. They must look beautiful in front of the blue gulf.

I like the perspective of your top photo and seeing the small green islands and seascape in the background. The arbutus tree is one of my favorites. The deep rich color touched with orange is so unique to a tree and I love how its branches twist and curl over time.

I love the arbutus trees. To me, they look like giant manzanitas. We have quite a few up the lake on the granite cliffs. They seem to like to grow in the worst soil. Glad you are enjoying your trip out our way. - Margy

Lovely place for a family visit -- we were on a roadtrip recently and I got way behind on my blog reading, so I didn't know you'd been away from home (but of course I'm not surprised).

sounds like you had a grreat time.
