What? The devil, you say!
How dare you?
Don’t you know who I am?
Look at me, a fine figure of a prosperous gentleman,
Drinking port and smoking fine cigars,
Rubbing shoulders with the wealthy and powerful,
Announcing my opinions with thumbs in my vest.
The devil, you say?
Be quiet!
I don’t want anyone to know.
Posted for Fireblossom Friday, at the online writers’ group Imaginary Garden with Real Toads. This week, my friend Fireblossom has asked us to write about the devil or any of his minions. The above rant just popped into my head, prompted, perhaps, by an e-mail I received this morning from my friend Judith. She and her husband have retired to a narrowboat on a canal in England, to be closer to her husband’s family. She painted me a wonderful word-picture of her husband enjoying his retirement, so I was still thinking of England when I read Fireblossom’s challenge. (My writing in no way represents Judith’s husband, a darlin’ man who worked very hard all his life and is entitled to enjoy his retirement.)

That was great fun, Kay! I can even imagine you reading it aloud in a rich and sonorous voice...lol.
I really must get back into the poetry mêmes...they're just my cup of tea.
Have an absolutely wonderful weekend...:)
One cannot recognize a devil by his/her clothing or beverage of choice. These devils are sneaky, have many guises. If they were easy to recognize, we could easily avoid them.
The poetry does go really well with that picture though. :)
I miss England at times. Had a friend whose family comes from Evesham in the Cotswolds. Still plenty of people live on beautifully painted barges and houseboats on the river there. Your notes reminded me of that.
Lovely.
I pictured a politician... I'm just sayin'...
There is something rather Dickensian in the saying. How I would love to retire to live on a canal barge. It sounds idyllic.
ROFL
Well done!
That thumbs-in-the-vest line is classic, Kay! Thanks for being part of FBF!
And having us believe he doesn't exist is one of his finest tricks!
Girl, this is SO true.

This is great, it has a Thomas Hardy/Dickens feel to it xxx
I would so love to live on a floathouse........loved your poem, Kay!
Yes, those devils come under all kinds of guises. Your posting was fun though..reminded me of W.C. Fields!
Wonderful! Love the portrait of the devil as a pompous old rich guy, probably closer to the truth than we realize!
Love the picture and your whimsical take on this!
Kay - that was a very clever write! Love it.
