Thursday Theme Song: beautiful, beautiful...

Beautiful, beautiful brown eyes
Beautiful, beautiful brown eyes
Beautiful, beautiful brown eyes
I'll never love blue eyes again
Willie, I love you, my darlin'
I love you with all my heart
Tomorrow we might have been married
But ramblin' has kept us apart

Beautiful, beautiful brown eyes
Beautiful, beautiful brown eyes
Beautiful, beautiful brown eyes
I'll never love blue eyes again
(Traditional - Alton Delmore / Dick Smith)

I remember hearing this song when I was little, and feeling quite hurt by the last line of the chorus because I have blue eyes! I was very, very young. In fact, if I remember correctly, the voice I heard singing it was the late Rosemary Clooney (yes, George Clooney's aunt) and she recorded it in 1951.

Several — no, not several — many other people have recorded it, too. Here is just a partial list:
Rosemary Clooney - 1951

Jimmy Wakely - 1951
Evelyn Knight - 1951
Chet Atkins & The Anita Kerr Singers - 1959
Kitty Wells - 1960
Gene Vincent - 1960
Ramblin' Jack Elliott - 1962
Jimmy Martin - 1977
Also recorded by: Delmore Brothers; Roy Acuff; Connie Francis; Carter Family; Armstrong Twins; Bailey Brothers; Dix Bruce; Gibson Brothers; Billy Walker; Burl Ives ... and others.

I remember Connie Francis singing it, Kay. Wow, haven't heard that name in years! Yeah, that would hurt a little girl with blue eyes. I have blue-grey eyes, so missed the connection,LOL. Hope you're having a wonderful time. Blessings. Jo

I really like Rosemary Clooney in the day. She was a nice lady with a great voice. I think she also used to appear on WLW's Ruth Lyons program at Noon.

Hmmm.....sensitively listening as a child? And now? Isn't it how the eyes see that matters most - blue or brown or any other color? Without doubt, you and your husband see the world around with great appreciation. Thanks for all you keep sharing with us.

I feel for you. And for me for that matter, since I am blue-eyed as well!

Those deer (or whatever they are, I never know exactly) look beautiful. And very fitting for the theme song!
