It's not that easy staying green
Having to spend each day growing in the heat
When I think it would be nicer being in a shady spot
When somewhere much more cooling would be neat.
It's not easy staying green
When the sun gets your leaf tips burned all brown
And people think that you should be cut down
Not standing here feeling oh so very dry
Wishing for clouds up in the sky...
According to Wikipedia:
"Bein' Green" is a popular song written by Joe Raposo in 1970 for the first season of the children's television program Sesame Street. It was originally performed by Kermit the Frog (voiced by Jim Henson). In the song, Kermit begins by lamenting his green coloration, and wishing to be some other color. But by the end of the song, Kermit recalls positive associations with the color green, and concludes by accepting and embracing his greenness.
Wikipedia also has a long, long list of people who have recorded this song. I had no idea, because, while I had heard the expression and knew it had been said by Kermit the Frog, I am not of the Muppets generation, and I am also not a mother. I'm an aunt many times over, so I was aware of the Muppets, but was never a fan. (I was very busy in the 70s and 80s.) Therefore, I am quite blown away by the number of people who sang a song I didn't even know existed. Check it out.
The link below is to a performance by the wonderful Ray Charles.
