Got on board an eastbound 747

Photos by Richard Schear

(Note: This was posted before The Big Blogger Meltdown, when the folks at blogspot.com decided to delete a day's worth of our posts to help them, somehow, in their site-maintenance. They promised to put them all back but, so far, I don't know of anyone who has had a missing post re-posted by the Blogger Boys. I've decided on a do-it-myself approach. If they also re-post it, I can delete one. In the meantime, it seems the Thursday Theme Song home page fell prey to the maintenance wizards, too.)

Never flew before on seven-forty-sevens,
Thought lots before deciding what to do.
All that talk of upstairs barrooms,
Reclining beds and comfort
Rang false, ’stead of true.
Economy is not the place for lounging,
And we’ve often had that kind of flight before.
It’s just not the place for lounging,
And, girl, don’t they warn ya
It’s a bore, it’s a bore.

Out of room, we have no bed,
Out of my seat, off to the head,
We’re underserved, we’re underfed,
We wanna go home!

It’s never comfy here in center seating,
And girl, don’t they warn ya
It’s hot, man, it’s hot.

Will you tell the folks back home we really made it?
Got to Amsterdam and got us on the cruise.
Please tell them that we’re happy,
Just tell them that we’re happy, that's the news,
That's our good news.
Seems it always rains in Europe when folks go there,
But hardly rained at all when we were there.
It alway rains somewhere in Europe,
But if you're there in springtime,
It’s warm, man, it’s warm.

All I can say is WOW! The nose of this plane is gigantic. I am always getting on the planes and not looking at the nose. Now I see just how huge they are. Fine captures. Love the blue color.

It took me a minute to place the melody, and then I had to sing it to your poem all the way through. LOL Lucky you! My father-in-law took a cruise from Amsterdam last year and loved it.

Thanks, Lisa. Always happy to know someone somewhere is singing one of my parodies!

That is some big plane. With my fear of heights I don't think I could be the pilot. - Margy

My very first flight from Amsterdam to Singapore was on a 747. At that time - 1983 - it was bliss. Especially with Singapore Airlines - those were the times when airtravel was still fun.

Every transpacific flight I take I fly the 747's and the Airbus. And they are huge planes.

Never flew KLM but JAL was the best I had, free upgrade to first class!

I love the tune, but it rains in Southern California

I've taken many flights on the big jumbo jets. Australia is so far away from anything that you needed them for any long haul flights. I have fond memories of family holidays to Europe and Asia on QANTAS jumbos - in those lovely days before air travel became such a pain in the butt.

I loved your song and heartily sang along. Very clever - and a fun start to my day.

Don't remind me. We have a 13hr flight coming up next month. The cruise from Amsterdam is super.

Oh wow! This is great, Kay! Great job on this song.

We'll get getting on one of those planes very soon. I sure hope it won't be horribly cold. I think we've made a mistake in deciding to go to Yellowstone and Glacier in early June. Oh dear. Here's hoping you're getting an early spring.

I remember the first time I was readying to board a 747....in LAX. And while waiting to go through the ticket line, I saw the enormous jumbo jet's windshield out the window of the airport and saw just how huge it was!! I then started counting the waiting passengers and configured in my head the extra weight aboard.....wondering just how the heck it'd get OFF the GROUND!!! It turned out to be a wonderful trip to Hawai'i!!

Great job once again for the meme.

You were really lucky with the weather, it's usually not warm at all in Belgium and Holland at that time of the year ! this year it was the other way around ! It was warm here in April up to 26°c and in Southern France only 18 °! We had the warmest month of April and part of March since 1947 !! that wasn't yesterday, lol!

What a great theme for your trip. Glad to here the only downside was the plane ride.

Oh wow, that's an awesome take on the song Kay. You really summed up flying economy class.

We had similar thoughts this week, my TST is also about flying .... but a different type.

Fantastic, Kay! You've captured the essence of 'economy' travel! Good to know that what followed more than made up for it:-)

I miss the Concorde - mostly because I never got to go on before it died. But a fast trip to Europe is what I need! You would have had a few extra hours than me in the air to compose this song!

It always rains unexpectedly somewhere, and Europe is no exception! Even here in the States. You say you are unfit for travel, yet you seem to be making a go of it!
What are the drawbacks, especially if a single
traveler? Nice post!

Good old blogger, it just zapped our comments into oblivion.

I remember I said how much I liked your take on the song. Also you really summed up economy class travel. I think I traveled once on a 747 on a cross country flight.
