It was March of this year, and we were on Viking River Cruises' Tulips and Windmills cruise, docked in Ghent, Belgium.
Everyone was going somewhere in Ghent, Dick decided as he explored the ancient city. Everyone was going to the canals. The crowds grew thicker, and Dick grew curiouser and curiouser. Finally, he asked someone, "Is it a holiday? No? Is it a special occasion? No? Will there be a parade? No? Then why is everyone out here?"
"Because it's such a beautiful day. We're all out here to enjoy the sun," the Belgian answered, smiling.
An early Spring day in Belgium, and the people of Ghent were making the most of it.

This is a wonderful set of photos, Kay. I particularly enjoyed them as Belgium is on the list of places I dearly want to see...I know I would love the old towns. Your trip was just wonderful, wasn't it? Such a lot of ground you covered, (and water!). So glad you took many pictures to share with us...:)

I really love that laid back attitude in spring time. We share that to a certain extent here as well - the second the snow starts to melt and the sun peep out above the horizon, you see people outside, gathering in the parks and turning their faces towards the sun like human sunflowers. It's quite an infectious mood.
Beautiful photos! Happy MYM! Here's my entry. Thanks and See you around!
So Many humans there, Kay
I guess if I were there, I prefer to be on the roof !
xoxo
Well, they will probably be a bit sick of all that sunshine by now: the land really needs some rain, we haven't had any for weeks on end now!
wow Lots of tourists there enjoying the beautiful sunny day!
I love Ghent, it's a charming city!
Your pictures are fabulous, congrats!

Its the same here in NYC .. mix together some sun, a few fluffy rain-free clouds and a park .. voila you have a large crowd of happy people.
when you said crowds, you really meant it
wonderful shots
I like that "wheelbarrow" bike. I don't think I have ever seen that many people crowded together for no particular reason. Is there a dearth of open space in Ghent where people can enjoy the sun?
Oh that is a huge crowd of people gathering informally, Kay. Wonderful photos story of a unique old town. I'd love to visit it. Be blessed my friend, and Shadow says, "Purrs" to aunt Kay and dear Lindy. Lots and lots arranging to get him from South Africa to Kenya. But it will be done. (((hugs))) Jo
Looks very much as if I had been there, lol (last time 2 years ago)
Ghent is one city I don't yet know, what a mistake of me...
Nice article, we love Gent
Lovely, & such a sweet story Kay!
Thank you for sharing it.
Belgian people sound very smart.
: )
Wow! That's an amazing amount of people. I didn't go into Ghent. I think I took a break while Art went out to investigate. He did say it was a picturesque sort of place.
Wowza! Those photos capture "the moment". The crowd looks like they're going to/in a pilgrimage. Beautiful account here.
Hooray for the people! I love it. Love too the "curiouser and curiouser"....that's what makes y'all such good travelers.
lovely..
enjoyed the sentiments, make the most of it, wow.
Love the spirit, photos.
