Where do you suppose these skies could be?

 New Mexico?

 Arizona?

Maybe Baja California, Mexico?

Perhaps the Badlands of Alberta?

No, none of the above.
Between Christmas and New Year's Eve, 2010, my husband presented me with some "surprise pictures" as he called them. He had found a memory card, in his movie camera, containing hundreds of still pictures taken just before Christmas, 2008, during our road trip around Spain. These were taken between Zaragoza and Madrid, and they certainly illustrate why the Spanish wanted to colonize Mexico, California and Arizona when they first came to North America: the land looked familiar to the Conquistadores, it felt like home!

Terrific captures and lovely skies! We lived in Madrid for a year and a half and your photos brought back lots of memories! Hope you have a wonderful weekend, Kay!

It also shows why a lot of spaghetti westerns were filmed in that region. Beautiful pictures, have a great weekend x

This reminds me: I need to scan in my photos of my one trip to Spain I ever took (Ibiza). A long time ago and I didn't see anything like what you saw!

Christmas all over again...! I know I have some additional photos somewhere, but for now I hardly have time to process and post what I take recently. I know this area of Spain, although I've spent more time on the southern coast. My grandparents and an aunt lived in Marbella.

That was a good question Kay as I believe they film western movies in areas of Spain. Got back from Egypt by the way but we didn't have to go via Cairo.

Gorgeous skies Kay. That one photo does remind me of Baja California.

What a fascinating post! Loved the comparisons and loved the idea that your sweet husband gave you these photo memories for Christmas. Loved it all.
