D is for driving, we're so glad we did in Hawaii

There's a letter D somewhere in these clouds above Kauai's Na Pali coast. Don't let your eyes be confused by the odd B and a rather fat example of the letter X. Hawaii has wonderful clouds for alphabet-seekers.

We had reserved a small rental car for our week on Kauai, but the only vehicle available was a Chevy Malibu, just like we have at home. Made it so easy, just hop in and drive off, no looking for what knob or switch is where.

One day we headed south past Nawiliwili Harbor, Kauai. For a while we thought we were lost amongst this beautiful scenery, but soon found a road leading into the city of Lihue, a useful place to be able to find for shopping.

We were staying in Kapaa, Kauai, and found some super-scenic seashore when we headed north from there.

The sign west of Kapaa said Opaekaa Falls, but we didn't try to pronounce it.

One day when I wasn't feeling well, Dick took the car and headed for Waimea Canyon on his own.
Not all roads on the island were passable, because it had just rained. Really rained, tropical style.

Dick got to see Waimea Canyon, however, and it looked almost, but not quite, the same as it looked when we flew through it on our fabulous tour with Island Helicopters. (There had been no low clouds that day!)

When we left Kauai, we took the multi-island cruise on NCL's Pride of America, which stopped for two days on the beautiful island of Maui. Instead of going on shore excursions, Dick rented a car and drove the twisting road southeast to Hana the first day. I was still unwell, so I stayed on the ship.

Three young surfers in the water off Maui. Dick got this picture of one, upper left, getting onto his board while another, right, heads out and passes the third surfer coming in.

The next day, we both went up Maui's 10,000-foot dormant volcano,  Mount Haleakala.  I chose not to go with Dick as he stepped off the road, apparently into nowhere, even though I knew there was a path hiding in this cloud.

I visited Maui, for the first time, when I was only eighteen, staying at the home of an Army friend who had been stationed in my home town of Ft. Benning, GA. My family always hosted the guys from Hawaii for holidays since few of them could get back home. Tom's family had ivited me to visit so, between my first and second year of nursing school, I did. I think that is how I developed my great love for all things Japanese. I was treated like a VIP. I've been back to Maui, and other places in Hawaii, many times over the years.

Hah, we both share driving for D! But I must say, lush tropics appeal to me more than sand dunes! Although I was in Hawaii in 1979, your photos remind me how very similar the place is to the Philippines. No wonder my sweetie like is here, as he has always said Hawaii is the only place he'd consider living in the USA. A dazzling D post, dear Kay.

Thanks for the drive around Hawaii. I've been to Maui and to Oahu and enjoyed both places but I've always wanted to do that cruise around the other islands. Hope you're having a great week.

I am so envy of the weather there, over here, still freezing.

Want to find out my D, come and see!

I so enjoy seeing your photos from Hawaii. You were in Kapaa? Too cool! My aunt and uncle live in Kapaa. I don't know if I told you about that fog we saw at the Pali. We heard later that it was vog that made our visibility so poor. I'm glad you got an easy to drive car.

I love the photo with all the signs, my hubby and I would have to check out that "umimproved, narrow, dirt" road.

Great drive Kay, thanks for taking us along.

The last photo really looks dangerous.
I think there are worse things than to be lost on Hawaii.

Thanks for the wonderful drive! Hawaii must be a very interesting island. I always read the blogs of Cloudia and the other Kay too! Did you meet either of them?

Wonderful photos, Kay - they really give a great sense of the place. The deserted beach is glorious but the final photo made me smile - all too easy to think Dick was stepping off the edge of the world;-)

If/when we get to Hawaii, this is what we'd want to do! (I've been there to visit our grand-daughter who went to school there, but Bill hasn't.) So many wonderful places.....

Thanks for the virtual tour.
