"They have monkeys," he said, but I knew I couldn't go tromping through jungles, even to see monkeys.
"And they have sloths," he added.
Sloths, I thought, I can relate to sloths...big time! (See Chapter 3, The Moral of the Story, archived December 17, 2009.)
Buttercup, a tame three-toed sloth (Bradypus variegatus) at the Aviarios Sloth Refuge. |
These orphaned two-toed sloths (Choleopus hoffmani) are being raised in the sloth refuge and hopefully will be released in the wild one day. |
These slow-moving creatures are amazingly difficult to find in the wild. This silhouette is the only photo Dick got. The two photos below are from Wikipedia, showing sloths in their natural habitat. |

Aww, so sweet! :) Thanks for sharing these with us.
I've never seen a sloth ( other than the two legged kind ). They are really kind of cute. It's good you went to the sloth refuge since, it seems, you didn't see many in the wild.
Amazing beasts. Thanks for posting.
Kay, how amazing that your husband managed that one photo. As for me, I've never seena sloth so this post was wonderful for me. Thanks for sharing. Thank you too, for visiting my blog so regularly. I love seeing you over there and will be over to visit you again soon. Have a great day. Jo
Oh, absolutely wonderful visit, this was!! What wonderful creatures.

When I grow up, I wanna be a sloth.
Beautiful captures.
Hungry Birds
They are so cute! Great shots, Kay, as always! I'm quite familiar with the two-legged sloths, but have never seen the four-legged ones -- they're a lot cuter than the two-legged ones I know!! Have a great weekend!

I stuck a cartoon in my diary the other day about a sloth. This particular one is hanging from a tree branch and is bored with his view. He moves his hands and feet about an inch and all of a sudden he loves the view since it's completely new! I love that one and this post and those gorgeous animals reminded me of that!
Great minds think alike again, Mara. Sounds like my kind of cartoon. Wonderful you put it in your diary just before I posted sloth pictures. The one I got to know best was Buttercup, because I visited with her when Dick and our group were out swinging through the jungle on ropes and things like that, but one of the baby two-toed sloths tried to climb out of its basket and onto me. Unfortunately, we can't touch them because too many tourists have left sunscreen and insect repellent on them. So sad. I wasn't wearing anything like that, and I'd have made such a good babysitter.
Kay -- I could fall in love with those! Marvelous pictures. Costa Rica is on my dream list -- so many places.....
It's the first time I see these critters. They are cute in the pictures.
Great shots.
Bellissimi e dolcissimi :)

fantastic shots!!
Letterman had the zoo guy on with a sloth, it was adorable - it's almost as if they're liquid :)
beautiful entry. I enjoyed looking at the pictures of different animals

Sloth !!!! I'm going to hide under the bed now !
Oh, Puddy, you are so funny. They won't hurt you. They're just pictures.
They are so cute. Great shots.
They are so sweet, cute pictures! I can relate to sloths because I move slowly. :)
Oh wow - aren't they just the sweetest creatures imaginable!
Great captures Kay. They are one of the cutest creatures. Hope to visit Costa Rica someday.
Hmmm... maybe a distant cousin of mine. :-D Funny, until I started blogging, I'd had no idea there even WAS an animal called a sloth. Now I've seen two posts in a few weeks. Telling me something... hmmm... but also learning. Nice one, Kay!
Did you know that they grow moss on their fur because they move so slowly. You sound like you belong to the same sloth club as my hubby and D1.
I do love your photos. I have been fascinated by sloths. It's just interesting that they move so slowly.
They are such strange-looking creatures with their flattened heads and outsize bodies. Great photos :-)
Great shots! We've only seen them at the zoo with the children. Very special creatures indeed.

Just beautiful! They are amazing creatures!
The top image is the coolest sloth shot I have ever seen! I love sloths and I'm glad to have managed to take one (just one...) photo in the wild, at the Tortuguero N.P., which I posted last week. Great collection you have there.
@ JM -- I checked out your sloth shot and it is fantastic. It was easy for me to get photos of Buttercup in her hanging chair because I was hanging out with her a lot, but I know how fortunate you were to see and photograph that young sloth you saw in Tortuguero. Gorgeous!

sloth is my middle name, the husband is overseas on work assignment, Today is labour weekend, I am having is very slothful weekend with my 14 year old son.
Oh my gosh how cute is that..I think I read that they have a special kind of fungus or moss that only grows on them....
I always thought sloths were amazing animals. Great shots. Is there any place you haven't been? - Margy
@ Margy -- yes, there are quite a few places we haven't been, but we're working on it! First question is always, can I get there? Second question is then, will I be in too much pain to do anything once I get there? LOL
I've seen one on TV. They move real slow and looks harmless, too.
Interesting information and photographs!
Such very strange and fascinating creatures as they are, I'm not surprised you were hooked by the promise of sloths! Great pics - especially that silhouette. And of course, the one of the sloth in the wicker hammock!
That's how I feel today, slothful. Thank goodness it's Sunday.
They're so cool! Look at the baby!
This came up in LinkWithin! What a hoot, they are!
