Our World Tuesday: a blooming shame

I published a photo of my flowering Nanking Cherry already but I just want to explain a little bit about our world...
look at the blossoms...
Photo by Richard Schear, April 2012
Beautiful, aren't they?
But a few days later...see my car in the background?...a few days after my husband took this photo of the Nanking Cherry, my car was covered in snow. For a couple of days I couldn't even look at the back yard to see if the blossoms survived. I looked today, and I see they did weather the storm.
Whether there's weather, or whether there's not, this is our world, southeastern Alberta, Canada, where snow is possible any time of year, even in the middle of one of our scorching hot summers.

Our World Tuesday: brown pelicans in Baja

My husband loves photographing pelicans. There were plenty of them around when we visited Cabo San Lucas on our Carnival cruise earlier this month.

This first fella wasn't doing much, but he sure looked handsome.

These opportunists hang around when fish are being cleaned near the dock.

Pelicans seem to congregate in groups both large and small.

This one is swallowing something.

And these two had enough of being photographed. One flew away; one swam off.

Our World Tuesday: not yet, however

No, no tulips for at least two months around here, but it's nice to see these ones I photographed last year, to know we still have hope despite the big snowfall we had in Alberta this past weekend. This photo was taken in early May, 2011.

Our World Tuesday: how soon they grow up

A blogging friend e-mailed me, because I had mentioned "the little ones" in our family, and asked me how many little ones there are. Some of them aren't as little as these photos from my archives show, and yet I think about this summertime visit and it doesn't seem so very long ago to me. How long ago was it? Well, the young fellow in the first photo is now 10, and will be 11 later this year. He's the eldest of our four grandsons.
See the tiny little bush behind him? It is almost as large as the big one beside it now. The old board fence is a thing of the past, replaced by "Lindy's fence" of green chain link.
Our granddaughters in the next two photos (taken the same day) are getting to be pretty, sweet young girls now. They haven't been babies for several years. How time flies!
See the yellow chair in the foreground of the last photo? It has been in the living room for quite a while so I could see how I like the color. I've decided I like it, and some day I'll have my grandmother's rocking chair upholstered in that same yellow, and put it in the living room.
First, however, I'm working on (i.e. thinking and planning) a kitchen reno. Our world will be full of dust and debris for a while (soon, I hope).

Our World Tuesday 25: camouflage

Desert camouflage clothing, worn by members of the Canadian and British military who practice desert warfare in our part of Alberta, is beige and tan, so the individuals blend into the landscape just as well as these deer, who would actually blend in even more if they didn't have white tails.

Our World Tuesday: a year in the life

I'll leave it to you to guess which seasons these photos represent in southeastern Alberta, Canada.

Our World Tuesday: we missed the deer

We often have deer feeding at our ornamental crabapple tree when there's snow on the ground and the weather is very cold (it's -21C or 5.8 below zero F today) and some deer did visit last night but we missed them.

Looking out the new window in the door by my desk, I could see the footprints in the snow. Too bad we didn't see our visitors.

Above, the wind just about filled in the footprints between the little Alberta Spruce and the wide Spreading Juniper behind it.

Some of these footprints were left by deer, some by Dick and Lindy.

In the back yard, all the footprints belong to Lindy.

Here she is, waiting for someone to answer the door after she scratched at it.

"Mom! Why are you taking pictures when you could be letting me in?"

Our World Tuesday: where's Lindy?

There was lots of snow and hoar frost in our world early in January.

This dog was waiting for Lindy.

He remembered seeing her in December, but she wouldn't look at him then.

There she is! There's Lindy! She's investigating something in the grass,
and she still won't look at her not-so-secret admirer.

Our World Tuesday: a new outlook on life

I may have mentioned (I'm sure I did) I have a new window. It was ordered for my birthday at the beginning of the month, and arrived last week. A nice young man cut a hole in the door beside my desk, and installed a sealed window unit with built-in magnet-controlled venetian blinds. Ah, the ancient Venetians never imagined anything like this, I'm sure, and it brightens up the room considerably.

It also gives me a wonderful view of our ornamental crabapple tree, where the deer come to eat when the ground is covered in deep snow, which we don't have at the moment, so I've seen no deer.
On the right day (or the wrong day) I also
get a good view of the neighbors' dumpster
when they've put it out for pick-up.

Our World Tuesday: late November

Here he comes again, that man with the yellow dog and the big black camera!
I'd better tell everyone else!

Do you hear him? I'll point my ears forward, you point yours backward,
then we'll be able to hear him and his dog breathing, wherever they are.

Aha, here they come, and the camera is pointed right at me.

Now it's pointed at all of us. What will we do?

I'll run up here, where there's a bit of snow left. That will distract him.
I heard humans don't like snow. They use something called a shovel to make a path.

Our World Tuesday: a few days in our world

Dick and Lindy pretty much stick to the red shale walking paths when they go out, but on November 13 this mountain-biker was riding on a trail carved on the side of the coulee slope by generations of deer, antelope and other wildlife. In the photo below, you can see the animals don't always make the trail very wide.

A rather raggedy skein of geese fly overhead, Nov. 13.
On November 14, the prairie seems to stretch into the distance forever.
