M: for Metz and its magnificent "gare"

We've been traveling by train in The Netherlands, Belgium, France and Switzerland, and when we arrived in Metz, a French city not far from the Luxembourg border, we thought it had a rather unusual train station ("gare" in French). A little bit of research (in a book, not on the internet) told us it's because it shows a distinct Germanic influence. Who knew? Learn something new every day, as I always say.   (Richard Schear photo)

I love the 'gare'. Traveling by train in Germany and France was a wonderful experience - wish we had more of them around here.

A book? One of those things with leaves and stuff? Wow, how novel!

Since Metz is in the French/German border area it has changed hands several times over the years, so that would be one of the reasons of the 'gare' looking so German.
