My World is from Ocean to Prairie

My world, when we're not globetrotting, is still larger than it used to be, ever since I married a man whose work and family are in Alberta.
My world now stretches from the southwest corner of British Columbia to the southeast corner of Alberta, some 1400km (870 miles) across a dozen mountain ranges including the Rockies, and across the prairie "where the deer and the antelope play".
The prairie, contrary to my long-held belief, is not completely flat. In some places there are hills and, in other places, coulees (a pretty word for holes in the ground, or ravines).
The coulees near the South Saskatchewan River start, for us, near our back yard. My husband Dick, and our dog Lindy, usually take their daily walk around the tops of some of these scenic ravines, and they never know who they'll meet: other dogs walking their owners; cats out for a stroll without their owners; or deer who know no owners. So far, Dick and Lindy haven't met any antelope, although we often see them in the fields on the other side of town.
This week, for My World Tuesday http://showyourworld.blogspot.com/ I've chosen some of the photos taken by Dick (Richard Schear) and Lindy (who doesn't have her own camera but is good about waiting while Dick uses his) so you can see a coulee, some of the wildlife, and a lovely coulee cat.

You can see other sights (and sites) from around the world at

Nice to see there are ups and downs in the pathways of Alberta … I love how small creatures merge with the landscape and make themselves at home!

I remember that particular line of the song my father used to sing when we were kids.

I admire the beauty of nature. Terrific captures!

Kay, I LOVE your blog title! I see you have a Coulee Kitty, but the critter you asked me about is a porcupine. It was tired of me snapping photos and decided to stroll (slowly) to the deck and hide underneath. I came into BC for many years to ski at Fernie Resort - a very scenic area.

Great shots. You have beautifully photographed animals from your part of the world in the wild.

Thanks, Barb. Of course I had to invent one of the words, but it pretty much means what it says -- not seriously disabled, just unfit in enough ways to make me unreliable and generally useless.
Loved the porcupine picture. I think I knew it wasn't a very annoyed tabby, but had to ask.
Glad you like BC. It's a lot like Colorado in that there are very few unscenic parts to it. Some, where it's been burnt, clearcut or strip-mined, but not many. Most of it is gorgeous, and of course it has the teeny tiny advantage of lots of sea coast. LOL
I'll certainly be keeping an eye on your blog and your beautiful photos. Thanks again.

What a great place for a cat to play, as long as the coyotes aren't around. When our (now my Mom's) cat comes to visit the float cabin it has so much fun out on the deck and underneath. He is an indoor only cat at all other times. - Margy

Thanks, Margy.
Yes, I loved your pictures of the cat at the float cabin.
We don't know who owns the coulee cat but he seems to be having a good time. He's in such beautiful condition, he must have an owner.
We've never seen coyotes over there, but of course they're quite elusive and reclusive. Not entirely, though, as we hit one on the Trans Canada on our way to Calgary one day. A most unpleasant experience, but he was hit by the radiator and died instantly.

I like the word coulee for some reason. I am figuring that the cat that you photographed in the coulee is of the wild variety. It is a very handsome (and well fed) looking feline.

Nice series of photos, your world is beautiful.

Your world has wide diversity, B.C. to Alberta. I used to think the Prairies were flat too. Ha! I'm so glad to have visited them to see that that's not true!

Julie -- We don't think the cat is wild. Recently many homes were built on the side of the coulee. Houses, public walking path, coulee, in that order. So we think such a healthy good-looking cat is just adventurous by day, and goes home to a house at night. Almost all the yards are fenced but, as we know, a fence isn't the deterrent to cat that it is to a dog.

Very pretty captures and so much wildlife. What a lovely place to live in.

Thanks, Janice. It is a lovely place to live in, but it took me a while to realize it. I missed the mountains in British Columbia. I missed the trees and the ocean. I missed my parents, who were still alive when I moved here. I missed my siblings, nieces and nephews. The usual suspects, as they say.
Then, when the prairie began to reveal its beauty, I was amazed, and thrilled. It's all there, if we look for it.

Hi Kay, It's so nice to meet another Kay. I used to think my name was too rare. We happen to love Canada and Canadians. Everytime we've visited Canada we've said Canadians are the nicest people on earth. Thank you for your lovely comment. I just did a quick walk through your blog and love the sweet, warm feel of it. I'm now off to breakfast. Have a wonderful day, Kay!
