G is for Getting Around the World

Okay, so many people have commented on the size of the Giant Tortoise, I thought I'd just add another picture to show you how right you are. Here is a tortoise and a tourist. The adult person is closer to the camera than the tortoise is, so you can imagine how big these reptiles really get. Thanks for all your comments! -- Kay

From the top down:

G is for Galapagos Giant Tortoise, one of the animals the Charles Darwin Research Center in the Galapagos Islands is trying to save from extinction, as we found when we went for a Galapagos cruise on the MV Letty with Ecoventura.

G is for Gran Ventana Beach Resort, where we stayed in the Dominican Republic. I laughed when I saw the swim-up bar: I'd never seen one before. My husband enjoyed it.

G is for Antoni Gaudi, the famous Spanish architect whose buildings attract the attention of all the tourists in Barcelona.

G is for ...no, not garden, but it's a good guess ...G is for grateful to be home: home with my green lawn swing; home where the green arch over the sidewalk is slowly being pulled out of the ground by the aggresive honeysuckle.

Go to ABC Wednesday to find more great pictures.

I love Gaudi's buildings, although I have never seen one in real life (but I want to!).

Great post for the G Day! I love your photos! How fun! I laughed at the swim-up bar. I saw one in Mexico, but can't remember now just where in Mexico. Love the building by Gaudi and coming home is always a gift! Enjoy the rest of your week, Kay!

I guessed the Gaudi one and would love to see it myself one day.

Someone once asked me the best place I've ever been. And I had to say it was home. You can only enjoy being away and visiting foreign places if you can go home afterwards. At least I think so.

Grateful to be home-isn't that the truth! I love Gaudi's building. Now I know who is the one behind the look of Barcelona. Those swim up bars can be a lot of fun-sounds like you had a nice trip.

You asked if people kept Gundis as pets: not that I know of (and I'm fairly up to date on exotic pets because of my rodent rescue). They are rarely seen in zoos, too, I think I have only seen them three times so far.

Oh! How wonderful that you've seen so much of the world! And also wonderful that now you appreciate your home.

Great post - love the tortoise and I'm not going to say how many times I've used a swim up bar. :) Home is indeed a gift.

No G for garden because Lindy at it all? Sounds like you have a challenge even greater than my visiting Canada Geese. Fortunately they have already moved on. I haven't heard or seen them in weeks. But the red-throated loon is still serenading us with his ack-ack and typical loon cries. You sure travel the world a lot! Must be fun. - Margy

Kay L. Davies said...

Oh well, Margy, at least Lindy is cuddlier than a goose, although she can be a silly goose too, at times. She's a darlin' dog and we're so lucky we found her instead of another rescue dog who might have posed even greater challenges.
I love the sound of a loon. Makes me think of lonely lakes at night, in the interior of BC.
And yes, we are in Travel Mode the last few years and for at least a couple more. Lindy can stay with Dick's daughter in the city near here, and be cuddled by the grandkids while we're gone. Some day we'll settle down in her (and our) old age.

Thanks, Roger. I'll have to tell my husband. He'll be thrilled our travels made you think of that, because it's his favorite Beach Boys song.

Great selection for the letter G! I love that tortoise! Huge! I hope it live a long, happy life! Thanks for sharing your story about Anacortes with me and for visiting my blogs!

Kay L. Davies said...

Aw, I'll bet everyone shares their Anacortes stories with you. Most of the stories just aren't as old as mine, that's all. LOL

What a great set of G-words and accompanying photos! Thanks for your visit and common. Gouda is beautiful in the town centre. That's the old part. But I think Brugge is more beautiful.

Imagine hauling your home on your back wherever you go … handy for quick escapes but quite a load to carry for this beautiful creature. :))

What is the difference between a tortoise and a turtle? I recently took photos of six giant T's in one of my near neighbour's yards! Lots of fun Gs here!

Kay L. Davies said...

Tortoises are land-dwellers. Turtles can live on land or in water. Turtles have flatter shells, also.
The Galapagos Giant Tortoises can weigh 400kg (880 lbs.) and can be as long as 1.8m (6 ft.) long.

Wonderful photographs! Wherever you go it's always so good to get home again, to your own bed and surroundings ;-)

WOW! giant turtle! that is incredible! I would love to see that in real life!
aren't swim up bars the best! lol

Kay L. Davies said...

There are Galapagos Giant Tortoises at the San Diego Zoo, and a couple of videos of them on youtube.
As for the swim-up bars, my husband likes them, but my motto might be "Don't drink and drown"! ;~)

What a wonderful bunch of G words. When you were in the Galapagos Islands did you get to visit Gorgeous George one of the Giant Tortoises?

Kay L. Davies said...

Hi Ann -- I think you must mean Lonesome George (although not as good as "gorgeous" for G Day on ABC Wednesday).
He was the last remaining tortoise on Pinta Island, and scientists have been trying to fertiize eggs of a female from a different island in order to produce some Pinta Island offspring, but I don't believe they have been successful yet.
I didn't get to meet him in person at the Darwin research station, but I did meet a couple of his distant cousins, and we saw a few in the wild.
The one I used for ABC Wednesday was crossing a field on its annual migration, and we actually saw some walking down roads toward their migratorial destination. Fascinating.

G is for "good grief" - he's a big fella (the tortoise, that is!).
G is also for "great pictures" - thank you.

Kay L. Davies said...

Hi Frosty/Sunny --
I checked out your blog and laughed myself silly. Your dogs are adorable. The golden one is a spaniel, right? Is the black/dark grey one a poodle cross by any chance? I can only see its back in the canoe pictures.
Our dog weighed 70 lbs. when we adopted her a year ago. Don't know what she weighs now, somewhat less but not a lot. If she jumped out of a canoe, my husband would have to jump in after her because we wouldn't be able to haul her in. She's mostly Golden Retriever but we don't even know if she can swim, as she only has a wading pool (now emptied because summer is fading fast).

Frostbite and Sunburn said...

Hi Kay - thank you for visiting my blog, and I'm glad you enjoyed it. The golden dog is indeed a Spaniel (crossed with I don't know what) and the black one is a Cockapoo who has Ball OCD!

Oh what fun! I remember that Gaudi house. It was so much fun to be in Barcelona.
