Magpie 62: She sighed, and sighed again

MAGPIE TALES

A meme hosted by Tess of Willow Manor, "dedicated to the enjoyment of poets and writers, for the purpose of honing their craft, sharing it with like-minded bloggers, and keeping their muses alive and well. Instructions: Write a poem or short vignette using the picture featured in this post as your inspiration."

She looked at the plate, and thought of Delftware, but suspected this one to be Chinese: an older civilization, yes, but now masters of mass production. She sighed.
She took a bite of toast, and grimaced because it was unbuttered. She cut into her egg, with its bright, spring-fresh yolk flattened somehow in the pan, and remembered the huge breakfasts she’d been served in Europe: thick pieces of fresh bread with butter and a choice of marmalade or Nutella; eggs topped with beautifully melted cheese and garnished with lettuce, tomato, and other delicious vegetation, all artistically arranged and presented.
She took a sip of coffee, instantly knew it hadn’t been brewed from freshly-ground beans, and sighed again.
What, she wondered, had ever happened to truth in advertising? She would never have ordered this breakfast if the menu had stated: “Two flat eggs flopped casually onto a plate with a bit of dry toast.”

You don't make it sound too appetizing. A clever indictment of a mass-produced restaurant breakfast. Vb

Truth in advertising must be imaginary! :) An apt prompt response.

clever switch on the prompt but I am not sure I want your restaurant tips!

You made me chuckle, Kay. Thank you:-)

On top of it all, the eggs are rather anaemic looking.

I love your description of the meals you enjoyed in Europe...no wonder breakfast is my favourite meal of the day! As for truth in advertising...it's falling into the realm of urban myth, is it not..lol?

Can't decide whether I would go for the Continental or Full English Breakfast - yes I can! Continental - crusty fresh bread and jam and freshly brewed (wonderful) coffee. English breakfast at mid-day is fine!

Nicely sardonic.

I was once told that advertising companies are not allowed to lie but they can 'bend the truth'!!

I can totally relate! I hate when the meal looks so great on the picture, but is not the same thing when you get it. Nice write! :o)
