Weekend Reflections: prairie sunsets

Photos by Richard Schear, June, 2012

When the sunset reflects off windows, it can look like fire (top photo) or it can bring a tree reflection with it, as in the second shot. My intrepid photographer is on the alert for interesting reflections when he's out walking with our dog Lindy. I often wonder what the owners of these houses think about the man with the camera pointed at them! So far, no one has phoned the Gendarmes about him.

SkyWatch Friday: over the prairie

© Richard Schear photo
Nothing flashy for this week, just an evening sky across the prairie. We haven't had snow for a while, but we have flurries in the forecast for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. Meanwhile, the temperature hovers around freezing, but doesn't stop Dick and Lindy's regular walk over by the coulee. Today on the way home, Lindy met a chihuahua. She was not impressed.

Pink was the skywatch color in Cold Lake, Alberta

There weren't many people around during Dick's walk to the wharf, but those who were there were fishing.

Autumn skies over the water in Cold Lake, Alberta, with a lovely pink tint at sunset.

Dick had business in the Cold Lake area, and he stayed nearby on this trip up north in the fall of 2010, giving him an opportunity to spend some time outside with his camera. Perfect for Skywatch Friday!

This young fisherman had just brought in a fish when Dick came along.

Skywatch Friday, can I get this right?

My husband, Dick, and our beautiful Golden Retriever, Lindy, walk every evening down by the coulees here in southeastern Alberta. Earlier this month, Dick got some fabulous sky pictures as the moon was coming up and the sun was going down, and they were published on this blog before I ever heard of Skywatch Friday, which I only learned about on ABC Wednesday. See http://abcwednesdayround3.blogspot.com/ (This is entirely too much fun, really.)
Here, however, are my favorites from my August 2 post, for Skywatch Friday: the moon rising over the trees as the sun is setting over the prairie.

Moonrise, Sunset

Photos by Richard Schear
The first thing I noticed about the prairie is the immensity of its sky. The sky is so wide, one thing can be happening on one side while something completely different is happening on the other. My husband recently saw the moon coming up and the sun going down while he was walking Lindy, our golden retriever. Fortunately, he had his camera with him and caught these beautiful shots. As a born-and-bred British Columbian, I will always miss the mountains but, as one prairie-dweller is reputed to have said, "We have a beautiful view, because there aren't any mountains to get in the way."
