The table was set up in the front window, where Grandma could watch the happenings on the street, and discuss them with her. Wendy giggled. She loved to have afternoon tea with Grandma.
“Just come on in and sit down when you get here, dear,” Grandma had said. “I might be busy in the kitchen, but I’ll be with you right away.”
Wendy loved that, too. She could sit on her cushion, which made her taller than Grandma now, and pretend to be the hostess. She admired the flowers, candles, fruit, napkins, plates—oh, look, even the silver salt and pepper—while she waited.
Eventually, Wendy grew tired of waiting, and wandered out to the kitchen to see what Grandma was doing. But Grandma wasn’t in the kitchen. She wasn’t in the pantry. She wasn’t even in the back yard, getting more flowers.
Then Wendy heard a moaning noise upstairs...
