SkyWatch Friday: Kizhi, Russia

Coming up to the island of Kizhi after the Viking Surkov sailed all night up Lake Onega in Russia, the second-largest lake in Europe. The sky is beginning to lighten, revealing the fascinating structures we will visit after breakfast.



The Church of the Transfiguration, left, has 22 domes, all made of wood.

The 9-domed Church of the Intercession

Repairs are constantly being made.
To the right of the church is the bell-tower of the Kizhi  Pogost.

The shapes we saw from the ship now appear as buildings.
The Island of Kizhi is now an open-air museum, with island citizens working at chores in the old way inside and outside the museum buildings.

    What a fascinating place this is.

    I have to say that I find the wooden domes rather amusing, but then there's no accounting for national quirks. If we were all the same, how boring the world would be.

    Even on a grey, overcast day the Zwiebeltuerme (onion-shaped domes) work their magic in the sky!

    I wonder how they maintained the wooden domes, they hold in time.

    We have an onion shaped dome church in our area, I should check it out.

    They must have a lot of woods and many laborers to finish that building and in those times how they made it is beyond me ^_^ A very awesome photos Kay and very thankful at least in photos I am like touring with you hehe. Happy weekend!
