Beautiful Barcelona, Antoni Gaudi, and me

Grey skies never deter devoted visitors to Spain...
I have always loved Barcelona.

It seems to me that work never stops on La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain.
Cranes and scaffolding can be seen behind the greenery behind and on either side.

Famed Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi's masterpiece cathedral,
on which he worked for 43 years, is still under construction,
but is expected to be finished in 2026.

 Gaudi was born in 1852 in Baix Camp, then the second city in Catalonia.
In 1859 he took over the design of Spain's most widely known church, La Sagrada Familia.
In 1914, Gaudi left all other work to concentrate exclusively on this project,
until a tragic accident led to his death on June 10, 1926.

 His funeral cortege went through most of Barcelona, and finished
in the cathedreal—a grand event in recognition of his status as
the greatest architect Barcelona has ever seen. He was buried
in the chapel of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in the crypt of the Sagrada Familia.

    an intricate structure for sure! Given that many of the ancient cathedrals took a generation or more to build, I guess there is no reason why this one ought not to also! YAM xx

    I have traveled extensively in the US and Canada and a bit in Mexico, but never anywhere else. My only desire would be to visit Norway (part of my heritage), Iceland, New Zealand and Australia. But that will probably never happen because I would have to leave my float cabin home. Such a dilemma. - Margy

    Hi Kay, Your interesting photos led me over to Wikipedia to read about Sagrada Familia. What an amazing church. I see that it is still under construction and not expected to be complete until 2026. They say some of the project's greatest challenges remain, including the construction of ten more spires, each symbolizing an important Biblical figure in the New Testament. Fascinating! Thanks for sharing your blog and for your kind comments on mine. John

    It's too bad he didn't live to finish his project but his days must have been filled with purpose. Living to your 70s back then was a pretty long life. Beautiful cathedral, sounds like it's in the running for most worked on construction.

    I agree with you Barcelona is a wonderful city to visit and Gaudi has much to do with why. You may have had gray skies but the architecture stunning. Have a good holiday.

    Rather overwhelming, isn't it. I remember it from a visit to Barcelona back in 1967, when I was only 11-12 years old... and it has grown considerably since then, I understand! ;)
