ABC Wednesday: D is for Dominican Republic

Dick tans, but I burn!

In 2004, I accompanied my husband on his company trip to the Dominican Republic, a Caribbean nation which shares an island with Haiti. I have to admit I did go swimming with the dolphins, and it was a thrill. At the time, I had no idea what some nations (not necessarily the DR) did with dolphins who couldn't be trained. I would still say my contact with these amazing animals was one of the highlights of my life, but I no longer support the idea of captive dolphins.

Although Dick accompanied me to Ocean World, he did not swim with the dolphins. However, the company provided plenty of opportunities for him to amuse himself. This race (right) somehow involved balloons and running. The limbo (below) involved a bit too much bending backward!

An aging jock who taught grades 5 and 6 for many years, and who still referees high school football and basketball, Dick seldom turns down an opportunity for fun and games.

He visited the Dominican Republic on a company trip again with his daughter Monica, and is returning there this month, accompanied by his daughter Randi. If there are races again, my money is on the Alberta team of Dick and Randi.

  1. If you have to go on a company trip, then DR would be a nice place to go!

  2. “D” could also be for Dick and his daughters who have been fortunate to see different parts of the world with their dad. Love that picture of you, in a neat purple lifejacket, and the dolphin. It might show up as another “D” word for another day. :)

  3. Wonderful to read about your fantastic trip to the Dominican Republic! Swimming with the dolphins is something my daughter did in New Zealand, or wanted to do, but the dolphins didn't come.
It is the same daughter who gave birth to the baby last week.
You did it actually, that's brilliant!

  4. It looks a beautifully lush green country, beach games can be fun, but I'll pass on the limbo:-)

  6. Oh what a FUN post, Kay! I just love that photo of you with the dolphin. I also don't like the idea of captive dolphins and whales, but that is such a beautiful experience. That photo of you and Dick is just gorgeous too. I take it he was holding the camera. That Dick is sure energetic!

  9. That looks like a fun trip to me. Interesting about the dolphins. I guess wild animals just shouldn't be part of tourist events, unless it is to look at them in their natural environment.

  10. Ah, the island of Hispanola. It peculiar how different each end is, culturally and econonically.

  14. Sounds like they have a load of fun there. I would love to swim with a dolphin but I too am not keen on them being trained for our entertainment.

  17. Those are great pictures Kay and certainly perfect for "D-Day." It looks as if you both had fun! I agree with your thoughts about being able to say you enjoyed an experience even if you subsequently changed your mind about it... I believe in continuing self-education!

  19. I've heard the DR is a wonderful place to visit for a vacation. I would LOVE to swim with the dolphins - I did get to rub one's nose at Sea World in San Diego and what a thrill that was.
