B is for bird in My World

TREE SWALLOW
Friends of mine used to have a parrot named "Beefer".
"Why did you call him Beefer? Because he's so big?" people would ask.
"No, it's B for bird," they'd reply.

Here are a few birds Dick and Lindy have met while out on their walks nearby. Well, they didn't exactly meet the turkey buzzard flying overhead, but Dick did manage to get a photo of it.

TURKEY BUZZARD
JUVENILE ROBIN

Is any group of crows called "a murder of crows" or does the designation "a murder" just apply to a group of crows sitting on a wire?
(Something my brothers and/or my husband would call "a crows line".)
BLUEJAY IN OUR ORNAMENTAL CRABAPPLE TREE, LATE WINTER

REDWING BLACKBIRD
WAXWING FLOCK, LATE WINTER

After leaving this little fella filed as "mystery bird" for a long time, I finally did some online research and I now think he is probably a juvenile yellow warbler. I've posted him here in case anyone in southern Alberta recognizes him as something different.

  6. I love how the bluejay appears to be tangled in the branches of the tree … it makes for an interesting photograph, Kay. I wonder if it has found the tree again now that it’s summer and the apples might be there. The flock of birds decorating the bare branches also creates a pretty image. :)

  9. every time the other "leslie" comments, i get confused for a second and wonder if i already commented ;)

love that tree swallow - such a gorgeous shade of blue.

we had friends from new york who named their dog, "Bustah." everyone always thought they were just saying "Buster" with a new york accent, which, of course, is just what they intended...

I met a dog once that was name Deeohgee (not sure if that's how it was spelled). Get it? D.O.G.

  12. Great set of pics, Kay. I wish our jays were as pretty as yours. Although I suspect they probably have the same type of personalities - bullies of the feeder. :)

  19. Beautiful images Kay! Birds are the most difficult animals to take photos of. The bluejay is wonderful. The colours are so pretty.
Thanks for visiting ! Yes, I am still riding my bike, only when there is no rain and the wind is not too strong.

  22. My kind of post (lots of animals).
I call the turkey buzzard a turkey vulture.

PS In rehab centres we would try to avoid turkey vultures as they vomit when afraid (YUCK).

  27. A great set of bird shots, Kay! I very much like the Blue Jay...as you know, we see plenty of Stellers Jays here at the coast, but I've only seen Blue Jays once on a long-ago visit to Lake Louise.

I think it's very cool how you and Dick work together on this blog!

    Hugs to you,

  28. Marvelous bird photos, Kay, - I think your husband and your male relative's should take a turn at hanging the laundry out on the Crow's Line!

  30. birds... such an obvious choice and yet, I didn't think of it! there is something about seeing a flock of them hanging about on the top branches of a leafless tree that I find funny. not sure why.

  31. Beautiful birds!! I'm still laughing about Beefer.

  33. We do have a strange collection of words to describe different groups animals and birds. Interestingly, none seem to specify a number that must be reached before several crows become a murder.

  34. Great series of birdie photos. I believe the last photo of the bird with the yellow is a male Dickcissel. I have been running all over Maryland looking for one.

  35. Great pictures and a great variety of pics. It must have taken you quite a while to collect that assortment.
