D is for driving, we're so glad we did in Hawaii

There's a letter D somewhere in these clouds above Kauai's Na Pali coast. Don't let your eyes be confused by the odd B and a rather fat example of the letter X. Hawaii has wonderful clouds for alphabet-seekers.

We had reserved a small rental car for our week on Kauai, but the only vehicle available was a Chevy Malibu, just like we have at home. Made it so easy, just hop in and drive off, no looking for what knob or switch is where.

One day we headed south past Nawiliwili Harbor, Kauai. For a while we thought we were lost amongst this beautiful scenery, but soon found a road leading into the city of Lihue, a useful place to be able to find for shopping.

We were staying in Kapaa, Kauai, and found some super-scenic seashore when we headed north from there.

The sign west of Kapaa said Opaekaa Falls, but we didn't try to pronounce it.

One day when I wasn't feeling well, Dick took the car and headed for Waimea Canyon on his own.
Not all roads on the island were passable, because it had just rained. Really rained, tropical style.

Dick got to see Waimea Canyon, however, and it looked almost, but not quite, the same as it looked when we flew through it on our fabulous tour with Island Helicopters. (There had been no low clouds that day!)

When we left Kauai, we took the multi-island cruise on NCL's Pride of America, which stopped for two days on the beautiful island of Maui. Instead of going on shore excursions, Dick rented a car and drove the twisting road southeast to Hana the first day. I was still unwell, so I stayed on the ship.

The next day, we both went up Maui's 10,000-foot dormant volcano,  Mount Haleakala.  I chose not to go with Dick as he stepped off the road, apparently into nowhere, even though I knew there was a path hiding in this cloud.
